Neben Pinot Noir ist Syrah die Rebsorte, die an der Sonoma bzw. Mendocino Coast überaus erfolgreich kultiviert wird. Ihnen gehört die Zukunft in Kalifornien, abseits von Cabernet Sauvignon und Chardonnay. Jason Drew aus Elk im Mendocino County ist einer der erfolgreichsten Exponenten dieser Entwicklung. 


Seine Syrah Valenti Ranch is located on the top of Greenwood Ridge within the Mendocino Ridge AVA. This site is 6 miles from the ocean and 1,350 feet above sea level on a north-east facing slope. This is a challenging site with daily maritime winds resulting in cooler temperatures throughout the growing season. The cool coastal winds lends it to naturally low yields resulting in excellent ripeness and intensity at lower sugar levels. These cool conditions result in well structured, complex and intense Syrah at moderate alcohol levels. Drew has been working with the Valenti Ranch since 2006. Starting in 2013 we have taken over the lease of this vineyard, which gives us complete control over the farming practices of this unique site. Seasoned French Oak for 11 months co-fermented with 6% Viognier. 50% whole cluster fermentation. Gravity racked twice. 100% Native yeast fermentation. Dark red with light purple rim. Aromas of sage, bakers chocolate, cherry, red pepper corn and black olive, cured meat and lilac. On the palate there are dense raspberries, game ,fresh loam , violets and mineral quartz with citrus rind notes on the finish.
